RING in 2017 with VINNY

I’ve read a quote from Vinny…and he may have said it differently than I describe here. So I forward my apologies to him in advance…

Although, what I believe I read was somewhere along the lines of once he walks away, he doesn’t plan on coming back.  I’m certain we’ll see the phrase Win for Vin in 2016, as well as other catchy Scully slogans… Which is how I came up with the mindset for this thread…

Wouldn’t it be nice to see him again on Opening Day 2017!

(If only in the capacity of a celebratory ring ceremony)

It doesn’t take much to envision the smile that would embrace his beloved persona. It doesn’t take an audio specialist to capture the impending sound that would reverberate from the masses during this joyous celebration. It doesn’t take much to realize the celebration isn’t even about Vinny, just that it was somehow miraculous in itself, that he was in attendance.

So, having said that and as we ring in the New Year of 2016. Us Bums here at ‘Da Blue Toy Box should look forward with enthusiasm to having many conversations about how to and ( Let’s face it! We are who we are)  how not to acquire such a beautiful setting on Opening Day 2017…

What do you think the team as a whole, top to bottom, needs to accomplish between now and then, in order to capture such a wonderfully scripted dream? One with a ring celebration and Vinny?

Guess the Player?

(Okay, it’s obvious the photo below isn’t of a player…but the rules still apply!)

  1. Wishing you all a happy and healthy new year wherever you may be. As for Win for Vin, I am o.k. with him being the one who decides when to step down. It was always my hope he would voluntarily retire from broadcasting while still able to do the job. Let’s hope that is the case when the season ends.

  2. The only one I recognize is Pee Wee. Is that Red Barber above?

It was more like Bummer Sooner last night as Clemson was simply the better team. Still, OU had a good year and the program looks to be in good shape heading down the road.

  3. Yeah, we were bummed out here too…Yes the photo is Red Barber and the one on the last page was Casey Stengel… Pee Wee is in this new photo, I’m sure oldbrooklyn will be able to pinpoint some more players?

Maybe we can get a rematch of my Boise State Broncos and The Sooners next season.

  4. There’s always talk of adding two more teams to the Big 12 (for one thing there would actually be twelve teams) so they could have a conference championship game and make their case stronger for the playoffs. Boise State and BYU are always mentioned as possibilities and that would be OK with me as I could see the Sooners play once in a while. Provo is just a three hour drive from here. But maybe our two schools will meet in a bowl next year. It would be fun.

    • Boise State getting into one of the bigger conferences would be great. I have read that in order for them to accomplish this, the university needs to add curriculum. They posted a 30 year plan for the public a while back and the improvements where astounding. I spent a few years working on the campus as I was in construction. I remember the sunny days with all the young ladies lying on the grass in front of the windows of the library I was working on, fondly. It took forever to finish installing them things 🙂 I’ve been to Utah once Griz, my youngest brother lives in Alpine. It was quite the experience.

      • Working on that campus was probably the best job site I ever embraced. Not just cause of the scenery either. Having access to the Student Union Building for entertainment and food was something rare. I worked with one person who had torn (the crotch) of his jeans one day…It was just him and I dry-walling an auditorium in the Math and Science building. This dumbass decides to pull the fire alarm right as we go out to take our break (which we took sitting on top of the toolbox, of the truck he had backed into the first parking stall). When all of the sudden the doors open and about 200 students come marching out, they came down the steps and onto the sidewalk that goes right by where we were sipping coffee. The person in question with the torn jeans had no underwear that day and low and behold…yep! Most of the students were laughing…as was I. But what a dumbass!!! The students had to travel about 50 yards down the sidewalk to get to us, so there was an anticipated build up so to speak…

        • I also had two full-sized fire trucks and a police car show up on a Saturday when I was the only person working. Apparently one of the employees in attendance that Saturday (yours truly) emptied a bucket of water and taping compound out in the sand that the stucco guys were using to mix up with. We discovered that there was a storm drain underneath that went straight to the Boise River. It just so happened that a few environmentalist were having a fun-run that morning and as they crossed the foot bridge, they noticed the water had changed from clear to milky white. Good thing there wasn’t any paint in that bucket…(wink! wink!) I could have been fined and fired.

          • Another time, a buddy of mine was covered in drywall dust and his face looked like a powdered doughnut. He failed to wash up before heading to the Student Union Building for lunch. While we were standing in line to pay for our food, the young lady in front of us catches him checking her behind out. She slapped him and just like something out of a cartoon scene..up goes a white plume of dust…she started laughing hard, as did we all… I enjoyed that place so much. Most of the time you’d get jobs that just suck…especially when you’re working around suit clad business professionals. (Not that I can blame them…our crews were a tad on the rough side)

  6. I thought six years for a pitcher, any player for that matter, was extravagant and now Maeda apparently gets eight.????
Oh well. Somebody’s got to pitch. Season the kids in AAA a little longer, I suppose.

  7. I seen someone post onto Facebook yesterday that FanFest was only 30 days away…29 now… Jan 30th, as well as the excitement and anticipation of Spring Training, will be upon us before too long…

  8. Now that the FO has added the likes of Kasmir and (even know I don’t think it’s official yet) Maeda. What can we expect of the bully this season? It wasn’t all that spectacular last season, as even Kenley had his moments!
    .
Has anyone been thinking about this during their spare time? I haven’t been as active as I have been in the past when it comes to researching the on-goings of the team. (Meaning, I used to read a lot more.)

  9. Looks like the eight year contract of Kenta Maeda is heavily incentive based. The base salary is $3 million per year, while he can earn an extra $10 to $12 million through games started and innings pitched.

Interesting. Jhallwally has been recommending this type of contract for years. Thanks, Jhallwally!

  10. Fan Fest later this month? Somehow I am having a bit of trouble getting too excited for that event. Not even thinking much about the upcoming season in the same way as I usually do. For me the interesting thought will be focused on whether or not Dave Roberts and the new coaching staff can make a positive impact on how the Dodgers play the game, especially with the roster he will eventually have on opening day. What can he do that will be different? How will whatever changes he wants to make be received by the players and how will he implement the front office ideas with his own? Will there be too much focus on him and how will he be judged if the team struggles and misses the playoffs? Will the 2016 Dodgers surprise some of us and compete for the division title and even win it again? I suppose I am much more interested than I thought.

    • I’m curious to see how this team responds with the bully and the bats. I don’t live near the stadium, so FanFest just means ST is close. As always though, I enjoy my evening games, and I’m eagerly awaiting them. I managed to put my baseball money in the jar this month 🙂

  11. I think we can all agree that this team is in transition from old to young, Ned’s boys to Andrew’s. I also think how you’ll view the job the current FO is doing is by defining what “competitive” means to you. Is it a division title? 90-95 wins? A .500 ballclub? Or is it a team that leaves it all out on the field regardless of the outcome, even if it finishes under .500?

I like winning as much as anyone, but I’ve lowered my expectations for this club for the next three years to see how the rebuild goes. I’m curious to see if Puig can come back to form and if Joc can ever find one. I want to watch Seager grow and dominate. I want to see guys like JDL and Urias develop. I’d like to see if guys like Bellinger, Verdugo and Diaz become major leaguers. To me this is what I’ve been waiting for for years – a mostly home grown team instead of a bunch of mercs and PVLS. I want to put the Yankee years behind us and get back to playing NL ball, so I’m getting behind Roberts.

I’m looking forward to this coming season then for its potential, not the its reality. And what I’m hoping for is that when we come out the other side three years from now we’ll finally have the team we’ve always wanted.

    • We could be pleasantly surprised? The pressure should be on to add to the push at the trade deadline…

Maybe they’ll manufacture a way to rid themselves of some more dead-weight too???

  12. Speaking of the new guy in the Front Office–whose job duties have yet to be determined–how about the Dodgers, instead of throwing more money away on bureaucracy, FIX THE DAMN TV DEAL SO WE CAN ALL WATCH VINNY!!!! I grow more and more impatient with these a-holes.

  13. My idea of a competitive team is one that believes it can win every game, plays smart, can overcome adversity, is resilient, has everyone believing in the common goal, puts team above individual performance, works together, keeps its “dirty laundry” in the clubhouse/locker room, has players who know their roles when that is appropriate and hopefully also has players who can step in when required by injury to other players. I am sure there are other attributes that could be added to this list. The wins will come.

  14. I’d like to see the Dodgers re-sign Howie Kendrick since it doesn’t seem like the Dodgers are bringing up anyone to play there. I also liked having him.

  15. I wonder…who will be batting lead off this year? Last year it was mostly Rollins and Pederson.

I wonder…will Dave Roberts put more emphasis on stolen bases this year? Last year, the Dodgers were 13th of 15 in the National League with only 59 stolen bases.

I wonder…will Dave Roberts make sure Puig and others learn how to slide?
